The Institute for 4-H Youth Development is the youth-focused division of the Alcorn State University Extension Program. Youth development has always been a key component of the Cooperative Extension Service’s mission, and this Institute continues that legacy with programs that inspire, educate, and uplift.

In partnership with County 4-H Extension Staff and dedicated 4-H Volunteers, the Institute delivers research-based educational programming directly to the communities it serves, often at no cost.

These programs are offered in:

  • Public and private schools
  • Community youth organizations (e.g., Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs)
  • Local Extension offices

Through 4-H Club participation, youth not only gain valuable knowledge but also have the chance to showcase their skills in local and statewide competitions, developing confidence, leadership, and a lifelong love of learning.

Educational Initiatives
The Institute for 4-H Youth Development at Alcorn State University is committed to fostering comprehensive growth and leadership among young people through a wide range of educational initiatives. Each program is thoughtfully designed to equip youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed in all areas of life.

Agricultural Literacy
Our Agricultural Literacy Initiative educates youth about agriculture, food systems, and sustainability. By fostering an understanding of agriculture’s vital role in our everyday lives and the broader economy, we help young people develop a meaningful connection to the land, food production, and environmental stewardship.

Basic Life Skills
The Life Skills Initiative focuses on building essential competencies such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making. These foundational skills empower youth to face everyday challenges and thrive in diverse settings—personally, academically, and socially.

College and Career Readiness
Our College and Career Readiness Initiative prepares young people for success beyond high school by offering guidance on academic and vocational pathways. From resume writing and interview preparation to exploring career options and college planning, we support youth at every step of their journey toward higher education and meaningful employment.

Financial Literacy
Starting as early as age 8, the Financial Literacy Initiative introduces key concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding credit. By equipping youth with these essential financial skills, we help lay the groundwork for lifelong financial responsibility and independence.

Healthy Living
The Healthy Living Initiative promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being through engaging lessons and activities. Youth are encouraged to adopt healthy habits, make informed nutrition choices, and stay active—helping them build a strong foundation for a balanced and vibrant life.

Management of Risky Behaviors

This initiative addresses critical issues such as peer pressure, bullying, and other risky behaviors. By providing youth with practical strategies and coping mechanisms, we help them build resilience and make safe, informed decisions in the face of challenges.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics)

Our STEAM Initiative sparks curiosity and innovation through hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. From introducing coding and robotics to children as

young as five, to encouraging problem-solving and creativity, we aim to inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders.

By investing in these core areas, the Institute for 4-H Youth Development cultivates a supportive and empowering environment where youth can grow, lead, and succeed.
