Alcorn graduate Collett Charlton lands dream software engineer position at Apple Headquarters in California

Last summer, Alcorn State University graduate Collett Charlton of Jamaica, positioned herself to land her dream career at Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, California. Through the 2019 Apple and Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Apple HBCU Scholars Program, Charlton not only exposed herself to what the technology giant had to offer but also received a glimpse into life as a full-time Apple professional.

Her exceptional internship experience has transformed her dream into a reality, as she recently accepted a software quality engineer position at the company. Charlton will begin her tenure in January, shortly after earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science during Alcorn’s 2019 Fall Commencement.

What stands out for Charlton about her excellent career move is that it will allow her to leverage her newfound resources to bring technological advancements and awareness to her home country.

“I plan to start a program to help people learn more about computer science and the opportunities in technology that are available,” said Charlton. “I want to help provide a way for them to complete online certifications.”

Not having access to modern technology was the story of Charlton’s upbringing. Her childhood experiences of not having reliable technology are what inspire her to lead in changing things for the better.

“Growing up in Jamaica inspired me not only to provide people with resources, but also to educate them on what they are, their capabilities, and how to use them. I believe that with the proper knowledge, people in my country will find their passion, be inspired, and allow their creativity and determination to lead them towards success.”

Charlton has a big heart, which is why she’s anticipating her role in using technology to aid others in any way she can.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how my work will impact customers directly. It feels good to know that I am helping others through technology. Technology is the most powerful when it empowers everyone.”

Alcorn equipped Charlton and put her on the fast track to success. She credits her alma mater and department for preparing her for a great future.

“I’m proud to represent Alcorn at such an elite tech company like Apple. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science provided me with the necessary tools and information to complete my internship and earn my new position.”

Charlton is grateful to have crossed the finish line to her undergraduate journey at Alcorn. She appreciates the support of those cheering for her.

“It feels surreal. I am super excited and grateful about graduating. I thank God and my supporters for what they have done for me over the past four years.”
