Equity and Inclusion Statement
Alcorn State University is committed to sustaining a diverse and inclusive campus community that respects and invites the unique contributions that every individual brings to our great university. In our view, diversity of thought, identity, and life experience offer tremendous resources, and the spirit of multiculturalism must be infused throughout our institution to ensure the richest possible living, learning, and working environment. Thus, diversity exists in many facets – including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, culture, language, age, physical ability, emotional condition, family makeup, religion, genetics, veteran status, cognitive ability, geography, and intellectual perspective -- and helps to broaden and deepen our knowledge of ourselves, others, and the world around us. At Alcorn, we strive to celebrate and learn from differences, draw strength and inspiration from our commonalities, and work collaboratively and proactively to build an engaged community where all members feel affirmed and empowered to achieve success. Diversity is not a simple “add on” to existing practice, but rather, must become an “add in” to guide our everyday habits; as a result, it becomes embedded within the very fabric of the institution. Through continuous reflection of our beliefs, policies, and practices as well as ongoing educational programs that foster healthy interaction and understanding, the institution and its members will remain inspired to eradicate existing biases and barriers in order to achieve equity – ultimately positioning the university as a model for social justice.
