A Man to Admire: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. approaches, the Alcorn community gathered at a special tribute to reflect on his legacy on Thursday, January 12. Organized by the History Club and Department of Social Sciences at Alcorn, this event drew an overflow crowd from the University and beyond to the Medgar Evers Library Auditorium.
Mayor Paul E. Winfield of Vicksburg addressed the audience, speaking on the sacrifices of Dr. King, and challenging listeners to give back. “I challenge you to all be advocates of Alcorn State University and to make an impact by giving back,” Winfield said. “If one person gives, it becomes contagious.” Of Dr. King he shared, “He [Dr. King] was a man that cared about all people regardless of social background, creed, color or status.” Winfield added that even in today’s society, history can and is being made. “The path may be very difficult but I can tell you that we must be prepared, and if there is ever a moment when we do not know what to do, we must always remember to do the right thing.”
The program concluded with a gift presentation to the guest speaker and chair of the Department of Social Sciences, Dr. Alpha Morris.
