First Year Experience announces winners of Second Annual Essay Contest
Recently, the First Year Experience Program announced the winners of its Second Annual Freshmen Essay Competition held in December, 2011. In their essays, contestants discussed their role as a first year college student, and what they had to do to successfully adapt to that role.
Essays were judged based on the quality of the writing and the meaningful insight provided on the topics. LaTroya Scott from Woodville, Mississippi, wrote the winning essay and received a book voucher for $200. Jalessa Green from Hazlehurst, Mississippi, was the second place winner. She received a book voucher for $125. KaJahna Williams from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, won third place and received a book voucher for $75.
“This was the second year that incoming freshmen participated in an essay competition,” said Dr. Patricia White, Director of First Year Experience Program. “It was launched to provide a common educational experience, to reinforce the importance of college, and teach students to think critically; thereby building a stronger campus community because writing matters.”
The winning essays were selected by faculty members from the English and Foreign Languages Department: Department Chairperson Dr. Cynthia Scurria, instructors Ms. Sherita Bailey, Mrs. Kathleen Keys, and Mr. Henry Davis.
