Diversity Dialogue explores language issues, creates bridges to understanding

A packed room of about 70 staff, students, faculty, and administrators participated in the February edition of Diversity Dialogue, a monthly program sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Equity Engagement to promote conversation and awareness of diversity issues.

“This month’s topic ‘Speaking Truths’ examined the ways in which language serves as a mechanism for identity and inclusion as well as a potential source of division and conflict,” explained Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Diversity and Equity Engagement who opened the event with introductory remarks and interactive exercises that provided the context for the session.

Dr. Dickson Idusuyi, professor of social science and three students – Jeanelle Warren, Andrea Vera, and Douglas Curry – shared their personal experiences dealing with linguistic prejudice as well as the strategies that they used to overcome these challenges. Finally, small group conversation provided attendees the opportunity to identify their own language biases in order to work collectively to determine ways to build linguistic bridges for enhanced understanding.
