Alcorn raises $250,000 during alumni conference weekend
Alcorn State University National Alumni Association Mid-Winter Conference proved to be one of the most successful single fundraising weekends in the University’s history with the total amount of giving reaching $250,000.
To kick-off the weekend, the Vicksburg Medical Foundation presented President M. Christopher Brown II with a $50,000 gift to support students enrolled in programs leading to careers in medicine and healthcare. The gift brought their ten-year total giving to the University to over $500,000.
At the conference, the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association Foundation, Inc. contributed a total of $15,000 to the University and another $60,000 came from individual alumni and alumni chapters in attendance from all over the nation. Also, alumni and chapters presented $17,000 to the ASU National Alumni Association Foundation, Inc. for student scholarships.
Another notable contribution of $75,000 was received from Toyota for the Medgar Wiley Evers Statue Campaign. The check was presented at the Heritage Luncheon during Mid-Winter Conference. Following the check presentation, Toyota Minority Dealers Council President Winston Pittman of Louisville, Kentucky contributed $3,000 of his personal funds to support the statue and encouraged alumni in attendance to join his effort. As the result of his appeal, an additional $5,000 was collected throughout the weekend by Mr. John Jones, co-chair of the Medgar Wiley Evers Statue Campaign.
A $10,000 gift was received by the University for the men’s basketball program from an unnamed donor.
“We are elated to receive such generous contributions from our alumni and friends as Alcorn is continuing to serve as an educational and cultural beacon of Southwest Mississippi,” said Marcus D. Ward, vice president for Institutional Affairs / interim executive director of ASU Foundation, Inc. “These gifts will allow the University to provide more deserving students with educational opportunities and support.”
