ASU Extension Program and Natchez-Adams School District to host Peer Pressure and Bullying Youth Summit

ASU Extension Program and Natchez-Adams School District to host Peer Pressure and Bullying Youth Summit

“Resisting Risky Behaviors” will be the theme of the Peer Pressure and Bullying Youth Summit, that will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Natchez High School, 319 Seargent S. Prentiss Drive, Natchez, Mississippi, according to Brenda Robinson, 4-H youth development area educator and Youth Summit chair.

“Research indicates that nearly one out of every three students, between the ages of 12 and 18, reported being bullied in school,” stated Robinson. “To become responsible, productive and contributing individuals of society, our youth must be knowledgeable of and less engaging in risky behaviors that are detrimental to their social and educational development.”

She added, “The purpose of this event is to educate youth about peer pressure and bullying, and to inform them of the consequences of engaging in these activities.”

Topics to be addressed at the Youth Summit are bullying, healthy relationships, gang-related violence and consequences of bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, and psychological issues of peer pressure.

“I am expecting both youth and adults to walk away from the event more knowledgeable of peer pressure and bullying activities. Topics to be addressed at the Youth Summit are the consequences of engaging in risky behavior activities, how to develop healthy relationships, and how to psychologically deal with peer pressure and bullying,” Ms. Robinson. “Hopefully, addressing these types of behavioral problems can reach our youth and assist them with avoiding risky behaviors that are detrimental to their educational and social growth.”

The event is being co-sponsored by the Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) and the Natchez-Adams School District. Doors will open at 9:00 a.m. This event is free and open to the general public.
