Alcorn senior recognized as Student of the Year by MACTE

Senior elementary education major Tracy Catchings was recognized as “Student of the Year” by the Mississippi Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) at its first annual Recognition and Awards Ceremony for Outstanding Student Teachers held Friday, April 13, at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson.

“It was indeed an honor to receive this recognition,” expressed Catchings. The New Hebron, Mississippi native went on to say, “It is something about being the first when doing something and being a part of this inaugural awards ceremony was absolutely amazing.”

“Tracy has been an outstanding ambassador for the School of Education and Psychology,” said Dr. Robert Carr, dean for the School of Education and Psychology at Alcorn.  “She has excelled both in the university classroom and out in the K-12 environment as she has completed her field experiences and capstone student teaching experience.  I look for Tracy to be named the “Mississippi Teacher of the Year” in the very near future.  She will truly represent Alcorn State University well as she enters the teaching profession.”

After graduating on May 12, 2012, Catchings will finalize where she will begin her teaching career. She also plans to further her education and obtain a master’s degree in elementary education.
