Alcorn professor completes academic training on animal welfare
Dr. Voletta P. Williams ’87 ’88, associate professor of biology and chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, attended a 101 and 201 Series of academic training in which she received 12.6 hours of continuing education credit. The workshop was held in Little Rock, Arkansas, September 19-20, 2012, and was co-sponsored by the National Institute of Health, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Division of Assurance, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and USDA.
“The training was strictly on animal welfare, institutional care and use, and how to remain in compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture and the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) in regards to the policies and procedures of housing animals, animal care, health, and environment,” said Dr. Williams. “We will use the information received to train other committee members, researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students working in research laboratories.” The committee also includes Dr. Kenneth Stallings, the institutional officer, Dr. Cassandra Vaughn, the attending veterinarian, Dr. Bettaiya Rajanna, scientist, attorney Michael Keyton, James Powell Hudson, non-affiliated.
