Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion featured speakers at Port Gibson Middle School

As part of its community outreach efforts, the Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion has engaged with Port Gibson Middle School to address the academic underperformance of male students. On Thursday, November 1, a “Boys to Men” empowerment assembly was held for all boys in the school, with dynamic presentations by Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Educational Equity and Inclusion, Tony Innouvong, a graduate assistant from Seattle, Washington, and Otis Johnson, a sophomore criminal justice major from Lexington, Mississippi.

As a result of the positive experience, a partnership is being developed that would bring Alcorn men to the school each week to serve as role models and to deliver powerful life lessons through assemblies and small group conversations.

“The event was truly inspiring, and since our students need these kinds of special opportunities, we are excited to collaborate with Alcorn,” said Verna Grimes, assistant principal.

Dr. Greenfield added, “Our office and Alcorn’s incredible students are deeply committed to making a difference in our local communities and in the lives of children.”
