First Student Town Hall Meeting convenes to address questions and concerns
On November 5, 2012, Alcorn State University students, faculty and staff gathered in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom for the first Student Town Hall Meeting.
“The meeting was facilitated by the Student Government Association and designed as a platform for students to communicate their concerns and get their questions answered by the University administrators, faculty and staff,” said SGA President 2012-13 Marcus Mercy.
Some of the issues addressed during the meeting included questions about timely repairs in residence halls, transportation and parking on campus, student scholarships, grants and refunds, Gold Card issues, Internet speed and WiFi connection, out-of-state tuition waiver, price for academic transcripts, variety of the food and the hours of operation of the dining hall, the cost and preparation for exams required for entering graduate and professional schools, and safety on campus.
“It was a very productive meeting,” shared Victor Smith II, a senior majoring in biology/pre physical therapy. Essence Henderson, a senior majoring in biochemistry agreed with him and added, “A lot of student’s concerns were addressed.”
Erica Washington, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry, concluded, “Some of the questions raised, and suggestions offered by students will be taken in consideration by the department heads and administrators.”
The program closed with an announcement about the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching band being selected, among eight of the nation’s top bands, to participate in the Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase that will be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, on January 26, 2013.
According to Student Affairs, there will be a spectator bus available to students travelling from campus to the concert. A travel package that includes transportation, lodging, meals and entry to the Showcase will be put together, and the details and the cost will be communicated at a later date.
