Alcorn’s Choral Department spreads holiday joy in the community, performs in Port Gibson, Natchez and Vicksburg
Alcorn State University’s Choral Department spread holiday joy in the community by giving concerts at First Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson on November 28, St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez on December 2, and Christ Episcopal Church in Vicksburg, on December 6. The program featured the Concert Choir performing Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols” with guest, Kimberly Hauser on harp, as well as traditional holiday music and spirituals.
“The attendance grew tremendously this year at our regular sites in Port Gibson and Natchez. And the concerts were so warmly received,” stated Donna Schaffer, ASU Concert Choir director. “For the first time we took our Christmas program to Vicksburg, as we are trying to grow our involvement with all of the communities surrounding Alcorn.”
“The audience enjoyed our performance so much!” exclaimed Concert Choir member Amber M. Kinney, a sophomore double-majoring in music education and psychology. “It makes the students feel so good when people approach us after a concert and tell us how they loved it, and that makes us want to work even harder.”
“It was a wonderful experience to perform in churches with the Concert Choir,”
said Emily Lewis-Johnson, a junior majoring in music education, who played the flute during holiday concerts. “I enjoyed performing and sharing the gift of music with the community.”
“The concert was absolutely amazing,” shared Vicksburg resident Jimmy Kendrick, who came to listen to Alcorn students for the first time. “I hope they will come back to Vicksburg in the future. I look forward to that and will make sure to attend and bring my family.”
“These students are a wonderful group of young people,” stated Rector of the Christ Episcopal Church of Vicksburg Sam Godfrey. “Their talent leaves the audience speechless. We are so thankful to Alcorn for brining the choir here to give us joy and elevate our spirits during the holiday season.”
The Concert Choir announces that its spring 2012 CD “The Crucifixion” is available for sale at the Fine Arts Department. Pease contact Donna Schaffer at [email protected] or 601.877.6264.
