Living the Dream: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Alcorn State Univeristy has held several programs in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On January 17, the History Club and Department of Social Sciences organized a powerful tribute program. The event drew a large crowd from the University and beyond to the Medgar Evers Library Auditorium.

Former Natchez Mayor and Alcorn alumni Phillip West addressed the audience, speaking about sacrifices that Dr. King and the civil rights generation made so people could enjoy the rights and improvements they have today. In his powerful speech, West indicated, “While great strides have been made in society in terms of equality, challenges remain and you -young people- are key to finishing the good work started so many years ago.” West shared a statement first brought forth by Dr. King: imagine how great and successful American society could be if everyone was truly equal, regardless of social background, creed, color or status.

The program concluded with the Alcorn Chapter of Choir Psi Phi performing a selection of songs.
