Monica Thomas joins the ASU Extension Program Staff

Monica M. Thomas, a native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, was recently hired as the area family and consumer science educator for the Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP), according to Dr. Dalton McAfee, extension administrator. She will oversee the counties of Adams, Jefferson, Amite, Franklin, and Wilkinson.

In 2012, Thomas became a nutrition educator for the Clarksdale Municipal School District providing nutrition education for the community. In the summer of 2012, she became the assistant director for the school district’s Summer Feeding Program. She also created the “Get it Together: Yourself + Health Summer Camp”, a 6-week enrichment program aimed to build students’ self-esteem, promote physical activity, instill the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles and combat obesity.

With skills in school and hospital food service, Thomas has been involved in numerous activities geared towards improving the health and lifestyles of people living in the Mississippi Delta.

Thomas graduated from Alcorn in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics. In addition, she furthered her studies at Delta State University where she completed a dietetic internship. Currently, she is a graduate student in the Workforce Education Leadership Program in the Department of Advanced Technologies at Alcorn.

Thomas is a member of the American Dietetic Association, Coahoma/County Health Council, and Youth Leadership Alumni. She also possesses the HAACP/ServSafe Certification which allows her to promote food safety in food establishments.
