Saturday Science Academy announces winners of its 2013 Science Fair

Over 70 projects in nine science categories were submitted by eager middle school students to the Alcorn State University Saturday Science Academy 12th Annual Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Dressed in their best attire with crisp white monogrammed lab jackets, the students were as excited as “race horses at the starting gate” to present their projects. Their parents, friends and visitors cheered them on. For the competition, students were encouraged to be inventive and create original ideas expanding their ideas to new levels.

“All participants did an amazing job and to us they are all winners,” stated Mary Marie Trimble, Saturday Science Academy director. “The judges noticed the originality of the projects, and the quality of work showed that our students received that important element—parental support. We appreciate the hard work the students put into their projects and would like to commend their parents for helping and a great turnout.”

Students receiving the top three awards were:
1st Place, 7th grade, Heather Almekdad with The Green Machine, Category: Earth, Space & Environmental Sciences
2nd Place, 5th grade, Xavier Marks with Edison’s Edition, Category: Bio-Chemistry
3rd Place, 8th grade, Taija Brown with Would You Like Fries with That? Category: Bio-Chemistry.

Ms. Trimble stated, “We wish our students success as they present at their respective schools. Hopefully they will continue on track to regional, state, and even national fairs.”

SSA participants are attracted from four surrounding counties, although the program mainly serves 5-9 grade students from Claiborne and Jefferson counties. Saturday Science Academy is funded by a Federal Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is one of the many successful projects of Alcorn State University’s outreach initiative. Over 150 students enjoy learning hands-on math and science lessons in state-of-the-art lab facilities taught by expert teachers, university faculty and students.
