Alcorn Braves to play in the 2013 Circle City Classic

Alcorn State, Miss. (March 13, 2013) – Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of Alcorn State University whose thirst for the excitement of Braves football to continue this upcoming season will not be disappointed.

Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dwayne White announced that the Alcorn State Braves is moving its home contest against the Grambling State Tigers on October 12, 2013, at 4:00 p.m., to Indianapolis, Indiana, to participate in the historic 30th Anniversary Circle City Classic at the 63,000-seat Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.

“The Alcorn State Braves will field as the home team,” says White. “We are excited to make another appearance in the legendary Indianapolis celebration of HBCU excellence.”

“As the president of Alcorn State University, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to elevating the Alcorn football program,” says Head Football Coach Jay Hopson. “We appreciate his commitment to increase visibility and exposure for our Braves football program. We are looking forward to meeting Grambling on the gridiron at Lucas Oil Stadium.”

President Brown and Alcorn athletics communicated with several classics and Division I teams, but none offered the excitement and celebration emblematic of “Alcorn excellence”.

“The Circle City Classic supports educational achievements and provides much needed scholarships to the participating universities,” says Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the ASU Foundation Marcus Ward.

The Circle City Classic is a joint collaboration between the Indiana Black Expo Incorporated and the Indiana Sports Corporation. Since the first Classic in 1984, over one million dollars have been awarded in scholarships.

“The decision to move this year’s home contest between the Braves and Tigers to Indianapolis was right for Alcorn,” says President Brown. “What remains unchanged at Alcorn is our commitment to excellence in academics, agriculture, access and athletics. Our alumni and fans will experience more than a game—attending the Circle City Classic is a cultural phenomenon.”

Events for the Classic begin Sunday, October 6, with the Miss Circle City Classic Coronation and conclude on Saturday, October 12, with the annual Classic Parade, Fan Fest Tailgate and Battle of the Bands at halftime. For a complete list of events and details, click here.
