Alcorn to launch its Sustainability Program on Earth Day

On April 22, Alcorn State University will join people across the globe in celebration of Earth Day 2013: The Face of Climate Change. On that day, from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Alcorn will introduce its Sustainability Program aimed at raising awareness on environmental responsibility and protective actions.

Alcorn partnered with several companies to assist in launching the program including Green Alliance, Coca-Cola, Waste Pro USA and Xerox, to name a few. Vendors will be on campus during the event to educate the public on their sustainability efforts and inform participants what they can do to contribute to a more eco-friendly society. Alcorn’s Sustainability logo “Brave People, Go Green” will be unveiled and displayed on recycling bins located around campus.

“Participants can visit eco-vendors, student environmental organizations, and receive information about upcoming campus environmental initiatives and green jobs,” says Senior Vice President for University Operations and COO Betty Roberts. “We are pleased to celebrate this annual event with people around the world as we renew our commitment to building a healthier and cleaner society for all of us.”

Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II will be on hand for the groundbreaking of the new campus arboretum. Deuce McAllister of Waste Pro USA will be the keynote speaker for the day. “Shred-It” trucks will be on campus to shred paper, there will be giveaways, entertainment and much more. The program will also include a cook out for attendees on the campus green sponsored by Sodexo.

The celebration will continue on April 23 and 24 with the program spearheaded by the SEEDS Campus Ecology Chapter of the Ecological Society of American, the Department of Biological Sciences and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. The program will feature activities aimed at cleaning up the campus, and educating students, employees and the community on environmental issues. On April 24, at 9:00 a.m. everyone is invited to the Experts Symposium on the Environment showcasing mayors of surrounding cities, speakers from the University, Wal-Mart, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
