Child Development Laboratory Center director presents at Mississippi Early Childhood Alliance Conference
Ms. LaTasha Brown, director of the Alcorn State University Department of Human Sciences Child Development Laboratory Center, presented recently at the 3rd annual Mississippi Early Childhood Alliance Conference, held at Jackson State University. She presented on “Social and Emotional Development: Building Positive Relationships and Supportive Learning Environments”.
According to Ms. Brown, her presentation was a hands-on, interactive session that demonstrated to child care professionals the most effective way to meet the social and emotional development needs of Mississippi’s most vulnerable population — children from birth to grade 3. In the session, participants were also shown how to design learning environments that support social and emotional development, as well as how to use strategies with young children with challenging behaviors.
“Being selected to serve as a presenter at the conference gave me an opportunity to deliver valuable information to early childhood professionals. I believe in sharing knowledge with others so that the overall goal is met for educating our young children,” Brown said. “Building a positive relationship with children, parents, and the community at-large enables us to mold children to be able to adapt to the social and emotional changes of today’s society.”
The one-day conference was designed to model student-centered instruction where presenters engaged participants in training. The conference included panelists and presenters many of whom were parents, early childhood teachers, social workers, researchers, and other practitioners.
