Students recognize each other and employees for excellence

For the past four years, students have recognized their favorite student, faculty, staff, organization and class of the year. Nominees were made, votes were cast and the winners announced at the annual Braves Choice Awards on Wednesday, April 17, in the Gold Room of the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility.

This year, the Class of 2014 was recognized as “Class of the Year”, junior agricultural business management major Zackeus Johnson “Student of the Year”, Department of Chemistry and Physics Instructor Sonia Eley “Faculty Member of the Year”, Assistant Director of Compliance for Financial Aid Jamie Smith “Staff Member of the Year”, and the ASU H.E.R.O.S. “Student Organization of the Year”.

“Everyone likes to be acknowledged and appreciated for their efforts and the Braves Choice Awards allows our students an opportunity to do just that,” expressed Director of Student Activities Devina Hogan. “The winners should feel good about the hard work they do and know that it is not in vain.”

Greek organizations are also recognized. “The Greek ‘Who Runs The Yard’ is the only award not decided by the student body,” said Hogan. “Students tend to choose based on popularity. The winning fraternity and sorority are chosen by Student Activities on their academic excellence, community outreach – on-and-off campus, and overall campus programming throughout the academic year.” This year, the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. were recognized.

Braves Choice Awards is sponsored by the Student Government Association under the leadership of Student Activities. “We hope that others are motivated to step up and do more to be considered by the student body for nomination,” added Hogan. “It is indeed an honor.”
