Alcorn students participate in New Venture Challenge competition

Five Alcorn State University students participated in the sixth annual New Venture Challenge competition sponsored by Innovate Mississippi on May 21, at the Jackson Convention Complex. The goal of the competition was to identify the best business plan in the state among companies with innovation-based new venture opportunities. Nearly 50 participants competed in pre-revenue and student categories.

Alcorn team – business majors Dajauna Butler, Viola Campbell, Monique Ransom, Shaun Bishop and ag business major Justin Washington accompanied by School of Business faculty, Dr. Donna M. Williams – competed in the student category. The students pitched a business plan created for Ecoformulation company to develop a NASA patent-protected deicing and anti-icing solution for airplane safety, a product that is the only non-corrosive, non-toxic product available.

“This business plan was developed as a part of an elective class offered by the School of Business – Current Issues in Business,” shared Interim Dean Vivek Bhargava. “It was the first time for Alcorn participated in this prestigious competition and our students did a great job presenting the plan.”
