Alcorn to hold Brave Hearts 5K Run/Walk and Health Fair, promote obesity awareness

Alcorn State University will host its inaugural Brave Hearts 5K Run/Walk and 1Mile Fun Run on the Lorman campus, on Saturday, August 31, 2013. “Racing for Obesity Awareness” is the theme of the event that aims to bring attention to obesity as a disease and its disproportionate affect on Mississippians, and promote healthy lifestyle.

Part of the event will be a walk, one-mile fun run and a health fair sponsored by the University’s Health and Disability Services.
Registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the front entrance of Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility followed by the opening ceremony. The race will take off at 8:00 a.m.

“During the opening ceremony we will honor Alcorn’s track heroes Mrs. Mildrette Netter-Graves White, Mr. Willie White, Mr. Jerry Sims and Mr. Willie McGee,” said ASU Track and Field Head Coach Garry Lewis. “These legendary athletes set the foundation for the University’s track program in the early 1970s.”

Entry fees for the event are: $20 for pre-race registrants, $25 for race-day registrants, $5 for students, and $10 for one-mile runners. All pre-registrants will receive one free T-shirt, and all runners/walkers will receive one entry voucher to the Alcorn State vs. Edward Waters football game that will take place Saturday, August 31, at 4:00 p.m.
