Biological Sciences hold Freshmen Mixer
Alcorn State University’s Department of Biological Sciences welcomed its new students during the Freshmen Mixer held in the Math and Science Building auditorium on Monday, September 30.
“The theme of this annual event was ‘The Ultimate Connection’ because its goal is to connect freshmen with their advisors, familiarize them with the departmental faculty and staff, and our upperclassmen,” said Dr. Voletta P. Williams, professor of biology and undergraduate student coordinator.
The program included greetings by Dr. Patlolla, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and a welcome by Dr. Bettaiya Rajanna, department chair, an invocation by biology student Simyeon Butler, president of Beta Beta Beta, Kappa Omega Chapter, and the departmental faculty and staff introduction by student leaders Kendreka Pipes and Porcha Fuller.
Freshmen also had a chance to find out about research opportunities in the Department, how to connect with their advisers, learn more about the curriculum, student organizations in the Department and Honors and Pre-Professional Programs.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Rajanna encouraged students to take the most out of their college experience and become great students and achievers. “Our faculty and staff are here to help you every step of your academic journey at Alcorn.”
Kimberly Connolly, a freshman majoring in biology/pre-physical therapy, said that she was glad to attend the mixer as she “received a lot of valuable information about connecting with advisers and what I should do to get involved in research.”
The program concluded with freshmen earning prizes for answering questions about the Department and the University, and enjoying tasty refreshments.
