School of Arts and Sciences opens its annual Symposium Series with poetry reading
The School of Arts and Sciences’ Annual Symposium Series got off to a great start on September 25, 2013, with “Poetry and Poetics: A Discussion and Reading,” presented by Dr. Murray Shugars, associate professor of English in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.
Before a receptive audience of students, faculty, and staff from across the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Shugars read both his own poetry and that of other poets who have influenced his work. He also discussed various tensions that artists must negotiate, such as the relationship between the poet and his poetic personae and the place of the poet in commercial markets.
The Symposium Series will continue on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, with a presentation from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
