Alcorn’s Counseling and Testing Director selected to Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence Campus Violence Task Force
Alcorn State University Counseling and Testing Center Director Dyann Moses has been selected to serve on the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence (MCADV) Campus Violence Task Force (CVTF). The primary objectives of the Coalition are to provide statewide training to Mississippi’s higher education institutions regarding the prevention and response to campus sexual and domestic violence, to support community agencies in providing relevant and informed services to college students within their service area, to encourage collaborative partnerships in prevention, outreach and service between higher education institutions and local community agencies, and to identify and work on statewide policy issues and concerns relevant to college students.
CVTF is comprised of six colleges and universities and two state agencies designed to effectively address sexual and domestic violence issues on Mississippi’s college and university campuses. This group includes Alcorn, Ole Miss, Jackson State, Tougaloo, University of Southern Mississippi, Hinds Community College, MCADV and Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA).
“I am extremely honored and excited to serve for the Coalition and represent Alcorn,” stated Mrs. Moses. “The organization’s work is extremely important as, according to MCADV, college age women are at high risk for various forms of violence. Sexual assault, dating violence and stalking have been and continue to be pervasive problems on campuses nationwide. Statistics indicate that sexual assault is the second most common violent crime committed on college campuses. One in 20 college women (5%) are victims of college rape or attempted rape each year. Approximately 32% of college students are victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).”
MCADV has committed to provide Alcorn with resources and training needed to more effectively acknowledge the problem, create a greater awareness of campus violence, improve response to violent incidents and provide stronger support to female students.
Mrs. Moses attended the initial meeting on November 1, 2013, at the MCADV office in Jackson, Mississippi. The task force will meet regularly throughout the 2013-2014 school year.
MCADV was founded in 1980 by domestic violence shelter programs and advocates for battered women. The overall mission of MCADV is to bring about social change through advocacy for victims, provide technical assistance for member shelters, and promote awareness within communities throughout Mississippi.
