Alcorn holds its 5th annual Ethics Week, February 17-22

Lorman, Miss. (February 14, 2014) – On February 17-22, 2014, Alcorn State University will hold its annual Ethics Week – a week of campus wide activities designed to raise ethical awareness. The Honorable Philip West, former mayor of Natchez, will be the guest speaker at the program on Wednesday, February 19 at 11:30am-12:45pm in the BioTech auditorium.

A statewide event, Ethics Week was initiated in 2009 by the Mississippi Council of Business School Deans. It was proposed that every college and university in Mississippi designate one week in February as Ethics Week.

“The first Ethics Week in Mississippi was held in February of 2010,” explained Dr. Pj Forrest, School of Business faculty and the Ethics Week committee chair. “Many schools participated the first year, and Alcorn is proud to say that we have participated every year.”

“Our goal is to raise ethical sensitivity and emphasize the importance of ethics in all areas of the organization,” Forrest added. “The slogan for Ethics Week is ‘Alcorn: The Ethical University’ and each year we choose a theme to emphasize. This year’s theme is ‘Don’t Be Silent, Speak Up and Stop the Violence’. We are focusing on all types of abuse including domestic and animal abuse.”

Although the Ethics Week Committee made up of Alcorn faculty and staff oversee the event, it is a truly student driven process. The students choose the theme and, except for the program day, create and execute all events and activities for the week. This year there will be displays in the Kenneth L. Simmons Industrial Technology and Biotech buildings, a display and a survey in the cafeteria including a raffle with gift baskets, a trivia game in the J.D. Boyd Library, and a series of films, interviews and radio spots. Event includes “Business Matters” with a School of Business student and a representative from the Natchez Women’s Shelter who will lead the discussion on domestic abuse and its effects.

“On behalf of the School of Business students and employees, we invite the Alcorn family and community members to this free event,” stated Forrest. “Alcorn is looking forward to this week of ethics renewal and commitment.”
