Alcorn to host certification for artificial insemination and embryo transfer in cattle

Alcorn State University students and employees have a unique opportunity to participate in the “Career Development in Animal Science thru Experiential Learning: Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer” summer program that will be held at the School of Agriculture, Research, Extension and Applied Sciences (AREAS) in June and July 2014.

Dr. Melissa Mason, research scientist for the Beef Research Project, states, “This summer program is an outreach program for students and employees so that the artificial insemination and embryo transfer practice would become common. It is a way to improve genetics in your herd and is a profitable practice.”

To qualify for the certification program, one must have satisfactorily completed the physiology of reproduction course, possess a good grade point average, previously participated in livestock activities and must interview with a screening committee.

The students who are chosen to participate, will receive a $250 bi-weekly stipend.

Mason added, “At the end of the program, a written and hands-on examination will be administered. All participants will be required to pass this examination to receive the certification.”

The applications for the summer certification are due by 4 p.m. on March 31, 2014. To pick up and drop off applications, please see Mason at the Morris-Boykin Agricultural Science Building. For more information, contact her at [email protected] or 601.877.4006.
