Alcorn athletics takes part in the Toyota Green Initiative
Alcorn State University is taking steps towards creating a healthier environment with its new venture with Toyota.
A green Toyota Prius was presented to Alcorn’s athletic department as part of the university’s participation in the Toyota Green Initiative. The initiative is an environmental stewardship platform designed to educate Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) students and alumni on the benefits of adopting a sustainable lifestyle. The program launched in 2010 and is currently in its fifth year.
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Alcorn Derek Horne feels that the Initiative is the key to encouraging people to be conscious of keeping up their surroundings.
“This campus is a great example of taking good care of the environment,” said Horne. “So many places have been threatened because people don’t take the time to take care of their community. The Green Initiative is a great reminder of what we should do.”
Horne believes that the partnership will exhibit the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s knowledge of sustainability and its importance.
“I think that this is a great partnership with the SWAC. This partnership with Toyota shows that we understand the importance of sustainability and making sure that we can have a long lasting environment.”
