Richard Aglugub attends conference in Washington, D.C.

Students at Alcorn State University continue to broaden their horizons by taking advantage of imperative educational opportunities.

Senior Psychology major and O’ahu, Hawaii native Richard Aglugub were among several Alcorn students who attended the 2014 Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute Conference in Washington, D.C. Sunday, Nov. 9 through Thursday, Nov. 13.

Since 2000, this national program has developed students’ leadership skills, introduced various career opportunities, created a community of scholars, provided company’s access to a talented and diverse student population, and helped students make connections that lead to internships and full-time positions. Each year, the conference gives students attending the 47 publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), including the law and medical schools, a first-hand professional development experience.

The conference proved to be beneficial to Aglugub’s progress as a student and future career in psychology.

“Attending this conference was extremely intense, but very constructive and amazing,” said Aglugub. “The skills I learned at the conference has already helped me in my classes and will definitely aid me in my future career. I feel so much sharper and ready for whatever is coming next.”

The presence of other talented students at the conference motivated Aglugub to push himself harder in an attempt to progress in his field.

“Being in a room full of other top students that are just as good as you, if not better, was enough to change my mentality about my ambitions and endeavors. I can honestly say that this opportunity has served as a pivotal moment, not only in my academic career, but in my entire life.”
