Hopson, Gibbs takes top BOXTOROW Awards

The Alcorn State University Braves football team’s successful season continues to garner more applause and notoriety.

Alcorn’s head coach Jay Hopson and quarterback John Gibbs, Jr. were awarded the BOXTOROW All-America Team coach and offensive player of the year for their outstanding leadership on the field.

Hopson is the first SWAC representative to achieve coach of the year since 2009. He led Alcorn to its first eastern division title and first SWAC championship game and appearance and win since 1994. The Braves concluded the season 10-3, 7-2 in the SWAC, having won six of their last seven games. The Braves high powered offense earned them the top offense in the nation for several weeks due to them averaging over 45 points per game.

Gibbs, who was also named SWAC’s co-offensive player of the year before their championship game appearance, broke Alcorn legend Steve McNair’s single-season rushing record by a quarterback with 1,000 yards this season.

According to www.swac.org, the SWAC led all conferences with 12 selections on the All-American team and six honorable mentions.

The Alcorn State University family would like to congratulate Hopson and Gibbs on their accomplishments and look forward to more success in the future.
