Alcorn’s Joey Mitchell earns doctorate degree

Alcorn State University’s Director of Career Services Dr. Joey Mitchell recently accomplished a milestone in his educational career.

Mitchell earned a doctorate degree in professional counseling from Mississippi College Friday, May 8. His new degree will give him the leverage he needs to play an important role in various capacities where counseling is involved.

“I believe that I am in a better position to give back to schools, community, rehabilitation, mental health and career counseling,” said Mitchell. “As a counselor by trade, my primary concern is to assist others in obtaining realistic goals.”

Prior to receiving a doctorate degree, Mitchell created the program, “Effective Parental Self-Management,” a program manual for parent management training. Mitchell described the program as one that will improve the bond between the parent and the child.

“The rationale for the program is to assist parents with minimizing issues within the parent-child relationship, while helping them identify any irrational thought associated with harmful events. This program has enlightened my knowledge of child defiant behavior and changed parental perspectives about why children misbehave.”

Mitchell also completed a project titled “Integration of 1-2-3 Magic and Behavioral Self-Management For Parents Of Children With Symptoms Of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. His research, along with his parental self-management program, was published this spring and can be found at the Leland Speed Library at Mississippi College.
