Alcorn’s 2015 Homecoming “Yard Daze” events expected to cause nostalgia

Alcorn State University’s 2015 Homecoming week will take it back to the 1980’s with its festive events.

The “Yard Daze” events, which are inspired by Spike Lee’s 1988 film “School Daze,” will take those who attended Alcorn during the 80s down memory lane. Devina Hogan, director of Student Engagement, looks forward to celebrating Homecoming and seeing the revival of Alcorn traditions such as designing teepees.

“As an 80’s baby, I was elated to hear that the Student Government Association wanted an 80s themed homecoming,” said Hogan. “I’m so excited! I feel that we are going to nail the true essence of homecoming this year.”

The events will kick off Sunday, Oct. 11 with the Gospel Explosion in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom from 6 to 9 p.m. Alcorn will get into the 80s theme with a GQ 80s Fashion Show Monday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom.

The fun will continue Tuesday, Oct. 13 with the ’81 Jump Street event on the Campus Plaza from 7 to 10 p.m. Members of the Student Government Association (SGA), including current SGA president Adrian McLain, will officially take their positions at the SGA Inauguration Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. The In Living Color Party will follow in the E. E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym) from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Reigning Miss Alcorn State University Amber King will be crowned at Coronation Thursday, Oct. 15 in the Davey L. Whitney Complex from 7 to 10 p.m. Former Miss Alcorn Venita Bowie, who wore the crown during the 1982-83 academic year, is excited about returning to her stomping grounds.

“Coming back to homecoming is like coming back to visit family,” said Bowie, a Flint, Michigan native. “My college experiences and memories at Alcorn are etched in my mind forever. The friendship bonds I established there have lasted throughout the years! If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m proud to be called an Alcornite.”

A Greek Step Show will be in the Whitney Complex Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. The Homecoming Concert featuring rapper Doug E. Fresh will immediately follow the step show. The 2015 Homecoming Parade will begin at a new time Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9 a.m. For more information on this year’s Homecoming Parade, visit https://www.alcorn.edu/homecoming/parade. Last but not least, the Alcorn Braves football team will take the field against the Grambling State University Tigers at 2 p.m. at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
