School of AREAS Thanks Its Graduating Media Interns

On May 7, 2016 the Alcorn State University School of Agriculture, Research, Extension and Applied Sciences (AREAS) will be saying goodbye to two of its student media interns: Deja Harris and Jimmy Barnes.

The two mass communications majors have been working for the Office of AREAS Communications under the leadership of Dr. Freda M. Lawrence, director, and Mariel Hardy, TV producer/director.

During her media internship Harris, who will graduate with a focus in print journalism, covered the school’s events, conducted interviews, composed press releases and edited documents. Following her internship here, she hopes to utilize her skills with WLBT or WJTV television stations in Jackson, Mississippi.

“Alcorn has prepared me for my future by allowing me to do the work and putting it in my hands. Here I was able to dabble in the different aspects of media such as television, radio, and newspaper, and be efficient. I would like to thank Drs. Freda Lawrence and Elena Kostyleva for allowing me to work under them for two years. They’ve helped me better grasp the interviewing techniques and the technical side of writing such as editing and restructuring,” says Harris.

Jimmy Barnes, who will graduate with a focus in broadcast journalism, hopes to use his knowledge and experience at a graduate program at Mississippi State University.

“While working for the School of AREAS, I gained necessary skills and experience to further my career. Working here taught me professionalism in all situations,"Branes expressed.

The School of AREAS employees thank the two graduating media interns for their hard work and wish both of them the best in their careers and future endeavors.
