Alphas help Claiborne County residents give away school supplies to students

The Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at Alcorn State University spent a day of their weekend to help give back to the community.

The fraternity assisted Claiborne County residents in giving away school supplies to area youth Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Port Gibson City Hall. Students lined up at the City Hall to receive book bags, paper, binders and folders.

Delta Kappa Chapter President Patrick Herbert Jr. felt good about lending a helping hand to the citizens of Port Gibson.

“It felt great to help Claiborne County residents give away school supplies,” said Patrick. “Seeing the smiles and joy on the students’ and parents’ faces made me very happy. They were happy to see people giving their time and assistance. It was a remarkable experience.”

Patrick credited Chelshe Archie, an Alcorn alumna and librarian at Port Gibson High School, for inspiring the fraternity to come out and participate in the charitable event. He said that they plan to do more community service in the Claiborne County School District in the future.
