Students celebrate Braves football team’s third consecutive SWAC East title

It was a lively scene in the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility, as students, faculty and staff at Alcorn State University celebrated the Braves football team for clinching the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division and solidifying a spot in this year’s SWAC Championship game.

The celebration was held Wednesday, Nov. 16 in front of an excited crowd that encouraged the Braves to have a strong finish to their season. Alcorn’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Derek Horne thanked everyone for rooting for the Braves, and encouraged them to continue to cheer on their team.

“We want to thank you for your support this season,” said Horne. “Your support is the reason why the Braves will be playing in the championship game for a third consecutive year. We have our eyes on another SWAC championship and a Celebration Bowl victory in Atlanta. We’re going to need your continuous support so that we can #FinishBraveStrong.”

Before echoing Horne’s feelings about fan support, Braves Head Football Coach Fred McNair reminded Alcornites about this weekend’s task against Jackson State. He then gave credit to his dedicated staff.

“We have one more task before we go to Houston, and that’s to beat the Tigers on Saturday,” said McNair. “Thank you to the coaching staff, football team, athletic trainers and equipment guys and student body for your support. Without you all, we wouldn’t have made it this far.”

James Camp, a senior at Alcorn, is confident in Coach McNair’s ability to lead the team to another championship victory.

“I think it’s a good thing for the team and Coach McNair,” said James. “He’s done a fantastic job in his first year as head coach, and we believe that he can take the team all the way. Let’s go Braves.”

Desire’ Reed, a freshman, said that she is eager to support the Braves in their championship pursuit.

“I am so happy and proud of our team,” said Desire’. “I’m looking forward to supporting them. I hope that they go to Houston and show out in the championship game.”
