Delta Sigma Theta Sorority gets fit for American Heart Month

With their new initiative, the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Alcorn State University is promoting better health habits.

In honor of February being National Heart Month, the sorority started the DELTAcise Exercise Program Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the HPER Complex. Two more classes will be held on Feb. 13 and 15 starting at 5:13 p.m. Each session will last from two to three hours.

Kyree Freeman, a senior, said the sorority was inspired by the number of people who suffer from heart disease in the country.

“The inspiration of the initiative is to promote physical and mental health,” said Kyree. “We want to stimulate the mind through intensive workouts. We are using this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it both at home and in the community.”

Sharika Hodges, a junior, believes that proper exercise and healthy eating is key to being productive in life and the classroom.

“A healthy lifestyle is important because, along with exercise and proper nutrition, it leads to the reduction of diseases and promotes physical well-being,” said Sharika. “Proper nutrition and exercise leads to increased academic performance.”
