The team dominated the competition Saturday, Feb. 4 in the preliminary round at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. The win makes them eligible to compete in the Honda National Championship Tournament in Los Angeles, California, April 8-12.
The Braves, who are undefeated, competed against Dillard University, Xavier University, Kentucky State University, Tougaloo College, Albany State University, Stillman College, Philander Smith College, Concordia University and Southern University.
Issac Ward, a senior, history/pre-law major, was happy to contribute to the team’s first preliminary victory. He said that the win was a confidence booster for the team.
“Competing and advancing to the championship was very fulfilling because, for the first time since I’ve been a part of the team, we won the preliminary tournament,” said Issac. “This win gives the team confidence in our ability to bring Alcorn a national quiz bowl championship.”
Zion McThomas, a junior, English literature and music education double major, appreciates the team’s opportunity to display their scholastic prowess on a big stage.
