Lady Braves Softball team claim SWAC East Division title with win over AAMU
With their victory over Alabama A&M University this past weekend, the Alcorn State University Lady Braves Softball team solidified their division’s championship crown.
The Lady Braves (15-24, 12-3 SWAC) won the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division Championship Friday, April 14 with a 10-4 win over AAMU (13-25-6-8 SWAC) at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Alabama. After falling 6-3 to AAMU in game one of their best of three series, the Lady Braves redeemed themselves with a 3-2 win in game two. They went on to clinch their division with the win in game three.
Softball Coach Josef Rankin, who was named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2016, said that by claiming the SWAC East division title, the Lady Braves are headed in the right direction.
“Clinching our division is definitely progress for us,” said Rankin. “This is a testament to how hard the girls have worked. We’re excited about the accomplishment and what’s to come.”
Although happy about claiming the top spot in the SWAC East, Rankin said that winning the conference championship is the team’s main goal.
“We plan to keep working to improve on a few things. We hope to stay healthy so that we can continue to compete at a high level. Winning the division is good for us, but our overall goal is to win the championship.”
The Lady Braves are on a quest to win their first SWAC championship since 2010.
