Alcorn exceeds Academic Progress Rate single year benchmark

Athletic programs at Alcorn State University are being recognized for their excellence in the classroom.

Seven athletic teams recorded perfect 1000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) single year scores. Programs with a perfect score are Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Golf, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Track and Men’s Cross Country. The men’s basketball team increased 117 points to earn a 980 single year mark, which is the highest in seven years.

Due to the recent academic success of the University’s athletic programs, no bans or penalties have been issued for any of the programs for subsequent years.

Jason Cable, assistant vice president for Athletic Compliance and Academic Services, is proud of the athletics programs for being studious and remembering their top priority.

“As our APR performance continues to trend upward, it will strongly mirror the progress we have made academically and our continued focus on graduation and the holistic development of our student athletes,” said Cable. “In essence, we will prepare our student athletes for the next 40 years of their life.”

Besides men’s basketball, women’s basketball (+54), women’s volleyball (+42), women’s soccer (+40) and men’s golf showed significant improvement on their scores.

This year marks men’s track’s consecutive perfect APR score, which is the first time in its program’s history.

This year, a total of 64 Braves student athletes graduated in the fall and spring. Last fall, Braves student athletes combined to record a program record cumulative GPA of 3.20.
