‘Picnic-Style’ Lunch and Learn, July 28

In recognition of three July food celebrations, 50 participants attended the Alcorn State University Extension Program ‘picnic-style’ Lunch and Learn, July 28 at the Jefferson County Multi-Purpose Building in Fayette, Mississippi.

The event was held in celebrations of National Grilling Month, National Picnic Month and National Hamburger Month.

"The program was a huge success. All the participants were really engaged and asked very good questions about proper food safety,” says Jardana Brice, family and consumer science educator.

During the ‘icebreaker’ activity, participants showcased their knowledge of proper food safety cooking temperatures. Persons answering correctly received cooking thermometers.

Also, the hand washing and cooking area sanitation demonstrations displayed helpful techniques that can be used at picnics or other outdoors activities.

Topics included, “Grilling Food Safely,” “Cook, Clean, Separate, and Chill,” “Picnic Food Safety,” and “Basic Food Safety.”

Participants were served grilled hamburgers, chips, cookies and bottled water. They were, also, reminded of the importance of drinking plenty of water during outdoors events especially during the hot summer months.
