Dr. Edmund R. Buckner to Lead School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences

Dr. Edmund R. Buckner recently came aboard as the Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at Alcorn State University. Dr. Buckner brings with him more than 16 years of experience in the fields of Extension, agriculture, natural resources, research, and academics.

His most recent position was as an interim dean and director of land-grant programs at the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Prior, he also served as an associate dean for research and Extension, as well as, director of the Regulatory Science Center for Excellence on that campus. Dr. Buckner was an associate professor and full professor of Regulatory Science at Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 2006 – 2013.

“I am very excited to be here at Alcorn State University,” Buckner states. “I look forward to working with the faculty & staff to grow student enrollment, continue our cutting-edge research programs and share the important information that we have to offer with our farmers and ranchers as well as the local rural and urban communities.”

Buckner got his start at the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff where he earned an undergraduate degree in Agriculture/Fisheries. He is also an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point where he received a Master’s of Science in Natural Resource Management. In addition, he holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Resource Policy and Law from Purdue University, where his research areas encompassed: Agricultural and Environmental Interfaces, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Modeling and Environmental Policy. His research and Extension interests include agricultural policy, water quality and natural resource management.

Buckner is an alumnus of Harvard University’s Management Development Program and the Land-Grant LEAD 21 Program. He serves on the National 4-H ECOP Leadership Committee and the Jefferson County, Arkansas Salvation Army Board of Directors. He has also served on the National eXtension Board of Directors as treasurer, the Purdue University’s Discovery Center External Board of Directors, and as a panel chair for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
