Kristina Brown promotes women empowerment movement at Alcorn

The 91st Miss Alcorn State University, Kristina Brown, has created the initiative, “Women Empowerment Wednesday.” Through this initiative, female students at Alcorn can post their pictures on Instagram using the hashtag, #WEW.

Brown pondered upon the creation of this movement during summer 2016, but she put the movement into action in September of this year. The purpose of WEW is to promote sisterhood. This initiative helps girls to feel more confident about themselves and become involved in various activities on and off campus. There are different themes to each WEW such as: inspirational quote week, denim with a touch of purple, on Wednesday’s we wear pink, etc. After each WEW, the women gather to take a group photo to show others that the movement is becoming strong and others should join.

Brown stated how she envisions this initiative will start the creation of other events in the future.

“I’m trying to motivate the women of Alcorn to realize that it’s okay to help other women or give advice to woman in need. Next semester, I plan to have a big event centered around WEW. I wanted to get WEW around campus so women of Alcorn can be familiar with the movement before I start the events,” said Brown.

Since Brown is continuously busy with Student Government Association events as well as campus life, she has created a Miss Alcorn Promo squad, which includes motivated, hardworking and generous young women that are prepared to work to promote events on social media, as well as attend events to help make them successful.

Currently, the group consists of 19 young women, but new members are welcome to join. The Miss Alcorn Promo squad also post on WEW and encourage other women to join the movement.
