Torria Powell selected for Japan Study Abroad Program
An Alcorn State University student will participate in a study abroad opportunity that will introduce her to a new culture.
Torria Powell, a Hattiesburg, Mississippi native and senior, is among 18 students selected to participate in the Kakehashi Project, a study abroad program in Tokyo, Japan for emerging leaders, March 22-29. Powell is the only student selected from the state of Mississippi.
The project will include tours of cultural and historical landmarks, lectures on U.S.-Japanese relations and visits to leading technological companies.
The Kakehashi Project is the result of a partnership between the government of Japan and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF). Through the initiative, the CBCF, the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese International Cultural Center aspire to increase African-American students’ interest in and exposure to global opportunities and the culture of Japan.
Powell, a political science major, looks forward to receiving an eye-opening experience.
“I’m elated to participate in the program,” said Powel. “It will offer me a new world view of international relations and diplomacy. It is truly an honor.”
Traveling and experiencing other cultures has always been some of Powell’s goals. The study abroad initiative is just the beginning for her in terms of globetrotting.
“I’ve always wanted to travel the world. However, this trip will be great because it will allow me to enjoy the two things I love, which are traveling and learning about U.S and Japanese relations.”
Powell looks forward to learning valuable lessons that would aid her in her future endeavors.
“I’m hoping to gain a more detailed view of international diplomacy. This program will only enhance my understanding and matriculation into international law and politics.”
