First and Second Year Experience Program announce winners of Sophomore Essay Contest
Two sophomores from Alcorn State University were rewarded for chronicling their journey at the university.
Sarah C. R. Pierre, a St. Martinsville, Louisiana native and MyKaly Stevenson, a Ridgeland, Mississippi native, were rewarded for their essay entries during the University College Second Year Experience Program’s inaugural Sophomore Essay Competition Monday, April 23, 2018. Pierre won first place and won an Alcorn jacket and hat, and Stevenson won second place and won an Alcorn throw.
In their essays, contestants addressed their role as they near the completion of their second year as a college student, how they have grown, and their biggest challenge and greatest achievement. Essays were judged based on the quality of the writing and the meaningful insight provided on the topics.
“This was the first year that sophomores participated in an essay competition. It was launched to provide a common educational experience, to reinforce the importance of college, and teach students to think critically; thereby building a stronger campus community because writing matters,” said Dr. Patricia White, director of First and Second Year Experience Program.
