Perry Brumfield looks back on a rewarding career in agriculture as he approaches retirement from Alcorn
After four years serving Alcorn State University's School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, one of the university's most dedicated employees is ending his career.
Perry Brumfield, who served as the School's director of Operations, will retire from Alcorn at the end of June. In his role, Brumfield was responsible for the oversight of School's buildings and grounds. He also worked with School faculty to come up with ways to assist small farmers.
Brumfield, a Walthall County native who earned a bachelor's degree from Alcorn in 1980, has an extensive background in the agricultural profession spanning over 20 years. He began his career at Mississippi State University as an assistant agent in Marion County from 1980 to 1985.
After earning a master's degree in agriculture and extension education from Mississippi State in 1990, Brumfield worked as an area agent for Lincoln and Lawrence counties from 1991 to 1996. He later served as the county director/agricultural agent for both counties. He then worked with the National Network of Forest Practitioners as a consultant from 2010 to 2015 for underserved landowners in forestry throughout south Mississippi.
It has been a fantastic tenure at Alcorn for Brumfield. He spoke about his experiences and how he will always cherish them.
"I have loved and enjoyed being a member of the Alcorn family," said Brumfield. "This has been a fulfilling experience. The knowledge and experiences I've received here can easily be applied to many life situations."
Most of Brumfield's job consisted of assisting others in various ways. He, along with his dedicated staff, managed the upkeep of the Department's vehicles, buildings and grounds while working toward the betterment of farmers. Playing such a critical role in the lives of others has been an excellent experience for Brumfield.
"When I reflect on those I've assisted, I realize how rewarding my experience at Alcorn has been. It's good to know that my actions have benefitted farmers by adding value to their way of life through research and education."
With his time off, Brumfield plans to enjoy watching his grandchildren grow up. He also looks forward to preparing to step into ministry.
"I look forward to spending time with my grandchildren and focusing more of my time on my ministry. I also plan to take time to relax."
As he ends his tenure, Brumfield is happy to cap off his career at the School that provided him with the knowledge and skills that has led him this far.
"It feels great because Alcorn is where it all started for me years ago as a student. I appreciate having the opportunity to come back and finish my career at my alma mater."
