Troymain Crosby recognized for becoming a David M. Halbrook award winner
Student-athletes at Alcorn State University get career highs in their sports and the classroom. Troymain Crosby is the latest example of a Braves scholar that is dominating in both areas.
The standout Braves men’s basketball guard/forward was recognized for his academic excellence by winning the David M. Halbrook Certificate Award for Academic Achievement Among Athletes. Crosby is a Laurel, Mississippi native who earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management in December. He’s currently a graduate student majoring in business administration.
The David M. Halbrook Certificate for Academic Achievement Among Athletes recognizes the efforts of individual student-athletes who excel in academics, leadership, and service.
Becoming a Halbrook award recipient is a testament to Crosby’s work ethic. He hopes that his example of excellence will encourage those in his hometown to accomplish their future goals.
“It was an honor to be the recipient of this magnificent award,” said Crosby. “I pray that by receiving this award, I can motivate the youth and my peers back home to accomplish many things and stay focused.”
Growing up, one of Crosby’s motivational figures was his grandmother, who instilled in him the value of getting an education. He credits her motivation, along with his mission to escape impoverishment, for his dedication to his studies.
“My grandmother embedded in me the importance of taking care of my academics first. So, handling my business in the classroom was inevitable. Living in poverty and starting at the bottom as a Black man in America, I knew that I had to have knowledge to put myself in a better position.”
The aura that Alcorn’s campus provides for Crosby is another factor in his success. He praised the tone that the University sets for him to reach his full potential.
“Alcorn’s atmosphere is amazing to me. The vibe here keeps me sane. I also credit my motivation for allowing me to put in work after hours and not waste time.”
Crosby advises his peers on how to accomplish incredible feats on their journeys.
“Stay true to yourself, work smart, and cherish the ups and the downs. Get your work done early and remain humble.”
