Kyla Harris, a scholar who pressed her way to the top
Graduating with the highest G.P.A. from one of the top HBCU agriculture programs, Kyla Harris has dynamically paved her way to scholarship during her four-year tenure at Alcorn State University.
Harris takes pride in knowing that her hard work has paid off at the University. Attending Alcorn has always been her dream and obtaining her degree at the first land grant institution, in her words, is “a blessing.”
“Alcorn has taught me to persevere and accomplish every goal that I have set, even if it takes several attempts,” said Harris.
After graduating in December, Harris will fulfill her passion in rural development with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Single Family Housing department. Growing up, she witnessed individuals in her community face various hardships in attempts to acquire adequate housing.
“My heart is filled with compassion, so I understand the importance of having quality housing, especially in rural areas in America. What I enjoy the most about the Single Family Housing Pathways Internship is taking applications and speaking with applicants from all walks of life. I am overjoyed that I can be of assistance knowing that there is a possibility that one day, they will build or purchase a new home, or repair an existing home.”
For Harris, the field of agriculture has so many different opportunities, which is what she loves the most about the field. It is ever-changing, so a new goal awaits every day.
Harris is confident that she is prepared to flourish in her career. With the impact of her professors providing her with rigorous coursework and various internship opportunities, she is ready to achieve her future goals.
Overall, academics have always been a priority for Harris due to her family’s continuous support and motivation.
“Growing up, my parents and grandparents instilled in me the importance of obtaining an education. I have maintained this mindset throughout my matriculation.”
