Alcorn State University presents its 42nd ASU Jazz Festival, featuring renowned saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator Bobby Watson. The festival will take place on April 18 and 20, 2024, at various venues on the Alcorn State University – Lorman Campus and the Vicksburg Convention Center.
The events are free and open to the public.
On April 18, jazz enthusiasts can attend the Bobby Watson Workshop at 1:00 pm in the Joyce J. Bolden Fine Arts Building, Little Theater. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn from one of the most influential figures in jazz. Watson’s extensive experience as the musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and collaborations with esteemed artists have shaped his remarkable career.
The festival continues on April 20 at the Vicksburg Convention Center, starting with performances by High School Jazz Ensembles in Concert during the morning session. In the afternoon, College/University Jazz Ensembles will take the stage, showcasing their talent.
At 4:00 pm, attendees will have the chance to engage in a Question and Answer session with Bobby Watson, gaining insights into his musical journey and creative process. The Mississippi Jazz Educators will then host their concert at 7:00 pm. The highlight of the evening will be the Bobby Watson Quintet in Concert at 8:00 pm.
