Alcorn State University (ASU) mass communication students showcased their talent and dedication at the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Excellence in Broadcasting Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. Competing against peers from colleges and universities across the state, ASU students earned several prestigious awards in various categories.
Notably, ASU TV-13 captured second place in the TV Newscast category, with contributions from students Sydney Johnson, Larissa Chillous, Tyarian Carson, and Brandon Buie. Buie also earned second place in the TV Reporter category and third place for his TV Sports Story. Additionally, Chillous received third place in the TV Videographer category.
“It was a pleasure to see that the work I have done in the Mass Communication department has been recognized,” said Buie, a senior from Natchez, Mississippi. “This is especially memorable for me because it happened during a rough time in my life for me and my family.”
Buie attributed the team’s success in the TV Newscast category to the diverse skills of his classmates. “I believe that the use of everyone’s individual skills elevated our newscast to come out as good as it did. Taking what everyone is good at and putting it together made something special,” he said.
Buie shared the challenges he faced, emphasizing the importance of time management. “The biggest hurdle was balancing my time and projects. Work often arrived in rapid succession, so I had to carefully manage my workload while ensuring I devoted enough effort to each task,” he explained.
The recognition holds special significance for Buie, both personally and professionally. “Personally, it feels like such an honor. I never expected to be involved in media as a kid, but I dreamed of becoming a famous influencer. So, it feels like a full-circle moment to be recognized by those in prominent positions,” he said. “Professionally, it feels like a great opportunity. I hope my recognition can lead to doors opening in the media industry.”
Curtis Aaron, director of ASU TV-13, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments. “These awards highlight the hard work and talent of our students, who are competing at a high level against their peers statewide. Their achievements reflect the quality of education and training they receive at Alcorn,” he said.
Buie credited his experience at Alcorn and ASU TV-13 for preparing him for these awards and his future in broadcasting. “My experience has elevated me by giving me the opportunity to practice my craft. We have access to camera equipment, editing bays, and an entire news studio. Working with all these resources has truly helped me,” he said.
He also acknowledged the impact of his mentor, Aaron. “He has been such a big help since my first semester. His experience and wisdom have been life-changing. Without his assistance, I don’t think I would have been able to accomplish as much during my time at Alcorn State,” Buie said.
Looking ahead, Buie plans to finish his final semester at ASU and pursue a master’s degree while seeking a job at a news station within the state.
The Excellence in Broadcasting Awards Dinner is a significant event for the MAB, recognizing outstanding achievements in the broadcasting industry and promoting excellence among broadcasters in Mississippi. ASU students are also excited about the upcoming MAB Student Conference scheduled for November 12, 2025, at the JSU E-Center in Jackson, which will provide further opportunities for networking and professional development.
