Jerry Howard, director of user services for the Alcorn State University Center for Information Technology Services, recently became the first Alcorn staff member to complete the Harvard University IT Academy pilot program.

In collaboration with the Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC), Harvard’s Cyberinfrastructure-related Technology Enablement Program provides IT professionals at historically Black colleges and universities with technology and leadership training. Howard was introduced to the program by his former CIO, Donna Hayden, who encouraged him to seek opportunities for professional growth.

“She consistently encouraged me and my colleagues to pursue educational opportunities that would enhance our technical knowledge, strengthen our skill sets, and support both personal and professional growth,” Howard said. “Her guidance motivated me to step into this program as a way to advance in my career and stay current with emerging technologies.”

The pilot program included modules and workshops focusing on key areas such as the Trusted Advisor concept, Information Security, Service Mindset, and a UX Foundations workshop. Howard noted that the courses have provided him with hands-on experience in user-centered design and helped him develop skills to better support the Alcorn community.

“This program had a significant impact on my understanding of IT leadership and continuous learning,” Howard said. “These courses have made me a more thoughtful, strategic, and service-oriented IT professional.”

Howard encourages other staff at Mississippi State Institutions to step outside of their comfort zone and embrace every opportunity for development.

“Programs like this are incredibly valuable—not just for career advancement, but for building confidence, expanding your network, and shaping your long-term goals,” he added. “Be proactive, stay curious, and continue building on what you learn.”
